The H-2B visa program allows U.S. employers to import foreign workers for seasonal and temporary jobs in industries as varied as restaurants and hotels, canneries, landscaping, construction and seafood processing ONLY when qualified U.S. workers are not available.
Despite the fact that the law stats that the H-2B program should not result in American workers being shut out of employment opportunities, fears exist that this is in fact happening. While American workers are supposed to have the first opportunity at H-2B jobs, the current low wages make these jobs less than viable options for many American families.
